Charming Hydrangea
Origin of Hydrangea
This magnificent flower originally comes from Asia and South America, and it was in the 18th century imported to European gardens. And thank God for that. Could you imangine spring, summer or autumn bouquets without them?
Symbolic flower
Except the flower’s magnificence, there’s another good reason to buy hydrangea, they symbolise gratitude, grace and beauty. They also project abundance and fortune because of the excentive number of flowers and the generous round shape. The hydrangea’s colours symbolise love, harmony and peace so it’s perfect for use in floral work for weddings, funerals or birthdays.
Colours, shapes and sizes
Colours vary depending on a season. In spring and throughout the summer we can usually buy white, pastel pink, blue or soft purple shades.
As the autumn approaches, colours start to get darker....burgundy, strong purple or blue, green or brown. The heads are much stronger. as the hydrangeas in autumn are more mature. Autumn hydrangeas are also perfect for for drying. For best results, hang them upside down. You will not get a good result if you decide to dry a white hydrangea.
You can choose from single or double flowered varieties, globe-shaped hydrangeas, hydrangeas with small flowers in the middle and large petals on the edge (edge bloomers) or hydrangeas with a plum shape. The biggest one we have ever sold in the shop so far had 30cm in diameter. And that´s a laaaaarge flower. It was pink and you could almost mistake it for a sugar candy.
Care tips
To make the most of your hydrangeas at home, follow our tips:
- Cut the stemps diagonally by 3-5cm with a clean knife or garden scissors.
- Take off most of the leaves, leaving only the main ones just below the bloom.
- Make an additional cut across the end of the stem, to divide it in half. You can also crush the ends. Stems of hydrangeas are strong and wooden, this way enables them to drink water better.
- Place them in a clean vase, fill with tap water at room temperature.
- Do not place the vase in direct sunlight or draught.
- Hydrangeas drink a lot of water so make sure vase is always full.
- Enjoy.
